As a Visual Detection Engineer, you will keep Discord users safe by building systems, infrastructure, and pipelines to understand, detect, and remove harmful visual content on the platform. Our work supports proactive efforts by our Trust & Safety teams and enables safety-first product development, safeguarding the experience of our users who love Discord. You will be reporting to the Engineering Lead of Visual Detection.

You will:

• Expand the capabilities, coverage, and accuracy of our in-house visual detection pipelines written in Python and Rust

• Use detection signals to implement nuanced enforcement options based on harm and confidence levels

• Facilitate understanding of abuse data through systemic instrumentation of outcomes to construct new detection methods and improve existing ones

• Build scalable, self-regulating systems to improve coverage while minimizing false positives

• Collaborate with safety, machine learning, and product teams to build proactive and reactive solutions to keep our users safe

You have:

• 4+ years experience building scalable backend systems in Python, Rust, or other similar language

• 2+ years experience debugging and maintaining live production systems on Kubernetes

• Experience with relational databases such as Postgres

• Experience working on cross-team efforts to define requirements and build complex systems

• Experience integrating with external APIs and industry partners

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $190,000 to $204,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
